About our cause
The Youth Mental Health Foundation is a Devon based CIC, developed through lived experience and a need to support families caring for young people with mental health issues. In 2015, Claire and Joel Sutton discovered their 11-year-old daughter Jade was suffering from anxiety, depression and self-harming. They recognised that alongside the professional help Jade was receiving, there was a valuable contribution they could make to support Jade’s recovery. After supporting their own daughter’s recovery, they began supporting other young people and families in need.
Our vision is a world where young people have mental health resilience, and every parent, carer, youth worker and healthcare professional has the knowledge, skills and confidence to support a child in crisis. We achieve this by three main projects; delivering mental health assemblies and workshops with schools across Devon, a national online self-harm recovery course empowering families and in person support groups. All support is free of charge to those who need it. The success of these projects has resulted in Public Health Devon inviting the Youth Mental Health Foundation to lead a project to map, share and improve support for parents and carers of children who self-harm in Devon.
Our school assemblies and workshops:
So far we have worked with over 90 schools in Devon and have delivered assemblies & workshops to over 35,000 pupils. The assemblies and workshops are delivered by 18-year-old Jade Sutton, who helps her young audience to destigmatise mental health and find it easier to ask for help; Be resilient and understand that setbacks and disappointments are for learning and make us stronger; Accept, respect and celebrate our differences and our dreams; Build self-esteem and see an inspiring future for themselves.
Our self-harm recovery course:
This has been developed by a team of mental health professionals and families with lived experience, who formed the working group for the first module. The benefits/outcomes of this course include providing parents and carers with 1) Psychoeducation & skills training 2) Parental self-care 3) Peer support. The lessons and guidance in the course, will enable them to be an invaluable support to their child and assist their recovery. Currently, we have over 700 users.
Our mental health support groups:
This is a face-to-face program, to support parents and carers of young people (aged 8-17 years old) whose child/teen is suffering with health. The goal of the program is to equip these parents and carers to effectively support the young person’s healing. The University of Exeter, Department of Psychology are also invovled with the project.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Yours sincerely,
Joel Sutton
