About our cause
Our Vision
Imagine a Dartmoor that is once again home to pine martens, beavers, and wild cats – with woodlands that form part of a mosaic of restored natural habitats. Woodlands that coexist with farming, archaeology and recreation, connecting people to nature and to their heritage. We have a new vision for Dartmoor, one that looks wilder and offers significant benefits in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.
The way people look at England’s upland areas is changing. There is a growing realisation that many areas of the UK, including Dartmoor, would naturally be more wooded. Tree cover in the UK is a shocking 13% compared to 35% in the EU, and only 2.5% of the UK is covered with ancient trees. We are the only charity dedicated to restoring Dartmoor’s lost woodlands by growing native broadleaf trees in our two community tree nurseries with the help of hundreds volunteers.
Why Trees?
Native broadleaf trees provide essential habitat for endangered woodland wildlife - oak trees alone can support over 2,300 species! But trees also help to provide protection for livestock from wind and sun and provide medicine too. Trees protect our soils by reducing run-off and nutrient loss; keeping our soils nutritious for growing food.
Trees also help reduce flooding - the amount of rain we're currently experiencing due to climate change has increased the amount of flooding occurring downstream in urban areas. In 2007 the UK summer floods cost an estimated £3.2 billion! Bringing back trees in upland areas is key to natural flood management.
Trees are fantastic carbon stores - taking atmospheric carbon and storing it within themselves and the soil underneath their roots. Each tree we grow and plant stores half a tonne of carbon over a 100 year period! Planting trees is a vital step to fighting climate change.
Who are we?
Moor Trees was established in 1999 by two individuals passionate about rewilding the diminished landscape of Dartmoor. We are an independent charity dedicated to recreating native woodland across Dartmoor and Devon, and increasingly helping projects beyond. We aim to restore native broadleaf woodland by growing trees from locally collected seed in our community tree nurseries and planting them as new woodland on private and public land.
Each year we’ve increased our production, and to date we have grown over 130,000 trees in our two community tree nurseries which have been planted in Devon, creating over 140 woodlands. Currently the impact of our work reaches over 100,000 people each year through our engagement, community outreach, collaborative working with businesses, partnerships with other environmental organisations and groups, landowners, visitors, members, volunteers, and the public. We work with all aspects of our community and everyone is welcome to get involved, no matter their age, ability, or background.
What else does we do?
We run research, education and training programmes with schools, colleges, outreach groups such as Young Devon, and universities, advocating the role of native woodland creation as a major contributor in the fight against climate change and the ecological emergency. Individuals benefit from being involved as they receive training and support; enabling them to get back into work or providing them with mental and physical health benefits. Rural Devon is home to many isolated and lonely people, so the safe space we provide for volunteers to come together over shared tasks, is imperative to the communities we work with.
We are one of the leading community tree nurseries in the UK and have recently completed our Copse in a Box project, in which we sent out 400 free boxes across England containing everything that communities need to set up their own community tree nursery. As part of this project, we co-wrote The Tree Grower’s Guide, with The Tree Council which details the whole process of growing trees from collecting seed through to planting them. We’re also part of the Community Tree Nursery Collaborative and provide helpful information to other community tree nurseries up and down the country, to enable more local provenance trees to be grown and planted.
So far, we have worked with hundreds of landowners, providing advice, woodland design, and tree planting services. We also offer various tree planting grants to make woodland creation more affordable through the England Woodland Creation Offer, Trees 4 Woods, and the Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest grant scheme.
We need your help so we can continue to grow even more trees and rewild Dartmoor and Devon!
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Best wishes,
